John the Baptist. He played a significant role in the life of Jesus. Not only was he Jesus cousin but he was the one who paved the way for Jesus and was, “A voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord'” (John 1:23).
I love John because he knew what his role was and when it was fulfilled he backed off and let Jesus take center stage so to speak. In fact, John says in verse 27, “even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” It was a slave’s job to untie his master’s sandals to clean his feet but John didn’t feel worthy to perform even this humble task for Jesus.
The one thing that stood out to me through today’s reading of this passage was John’s excitement at seeing Jesus. In his excitement he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (verse 29). I pray that we will be like John not only as humble servants of Christ but to be truly excited to be with Jesus and share with others what He did for us.
